Ashfield Council passes stronger motions to oppose WestConnex. Extra motions were inserted to call for a halt to tenders, acquisitions and construction until a full business case is released, and a call for a parliamentary inquiry. These were copied almost verbatim from the petition letter which demonstrates that our campaign was decisive in making these changes. Only the Liberal councillors voted against. We must continue in spreading this campaign. Those in nearby council areas such as Burwood, Strathfield, Canterbury, Canada Bay, Rockdale, Kogarah, Hurstville, Bankstown, Auburn, Parramatta etc can help by getting local resident action groups to pass similar motions and communicate these to councillors. Also watch out for council meeting agendas for when WestConnex items come up. We can then run short targeted online petitions at very short notice to make sure there are strong motions and that they get a majority. Councillors should be particularly sensitive in this period leading up to council elections next year. We must keep up this fight for the sake of our wonderful city and all who live and work here.
