Please find a link to the Walton Street Pool Assessment which includes the statement of intent. Walton Street Assessment is the third file: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0BySa0wyXWUQVX0R1MzlHak9rbDQ
As stated in the assessment, "This report is intended to determine the physical condition of the swimming pool structure, as well as the pump systems...and code compliance to current ADA requirements and Health Department regulations. The pool was built approximately in 1938 and is estimated to be 77 years old."
"My professional opinion is not to be more money in the current pool but continue to plan for a new pool facility. Our recommendation for the near future is to develop a plan for construction of a new pool that will meet the needs of the community and that is designed to current Health Department and ADA code compliance."

Although previous 2016 discussion has occurred, assessment information (dated August 29, 2016), along with upcoming community input (January 31, 2017), will assist the City of Asheville in an informed final decision in the outcome of Walton Street Pool.
In addition, for clarity, a January 31, 2017; 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. community meeting has been scheduled. Light refreshments served at 5:30 p.m. This meeting will be held at the Arthur R. Edington Center; 133 Livingston Street; Asheville.
Several smaller focus group meetings have already taken place. In an effort to maximize community outreach, a survey has been compiled and several public interviews/informational sessions with Mr. Roderick Simmons, Director of Asheville Parks & Recreation Department has been requested. The requested efforts should be in action before the larger community meeting.
To make it perfectly clear, brief discussion within the smaller focus groups include topics referencing both Walton Street Pool and completion of the Grant Center located at the bottom of Livingston Street and intersection of Depot. One of the suggestions made was to build the new pool at the Grant Center; and as a result close down Walton Street Pool...one of the last historical sites near and dear to many local African-American community members.
Many of the focus group members expressed the need to receive a greater community input before making a final decision.
Mr. Roderick Simmons is being held to his previously spoken February 2016 words, " But the results of that study are just one piece of the puzzle, continued Simmons. Parks & Rec plans to look at the recreation needs of the Southside community as a whole. Simmons said priorities for three key facilities must be considered: the gymnasium at the Dr. Wesley Grant, Sr. Southside Center (which was promised to the community but has yet to be built), the overall design and function of the Walton Street Park and the Walton Street pool. “I want the community to decide,” said Simmons of the process for prioritizing spending on recreation facilities in the area.
Community of Asheville, most importantly those impacted the most, please, don't complain, don't refrain, show up and let your voice be heard!
Thank you for your interest and support.
