Withdraw The Fee Hike
The Issue
This is regarding the fee hike we students of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University have been informed about recently by our colleges. Every IP University student pays around 50 thousand to 80 thousand rupees fee p.a. for their education. Some of us are able to afford it on our own, many apply for loans. However, a latest circular by Govt. Of NCT Delhi, Directorate of Higher Education says that the annual fees has been revised w.e.f. academic year 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 by 12,000 per year in some colleges and even higher in others. The students have been directed to pay the 'due' fees of last two years in a time of 10 days. We have tried talking to our college faculty regarding this, but they are just as helpless as us, because this all lies in the hands of Delhi Government. We have some fairly straight questions and a simple demand:
- How is it relevant to hike the fee in the middle of the semester? We have already paid our fee for the entire session, especially the final year students, who are only left with 2 more months before graduation.
- The circular was published on February 19, 2016 regarding the revision of fee for the session 2014- above. If the government is late with revision, why are we asked to pay anything for the past year? It is like asking for the petrol money after two years because the price has risen now.
- How is the fee hike going to benefit the students? especially when it concerns the payment for previous year. How can the final year student benefit from it when they are already graduating in 2 months? Why should they pay anything now?
- How is it relevant to ask for the "revised/ due fee" in the middle of a semester? If the circular was published in february 2016, the new fee should be made applicable from the new commencing academic year.
- The hiked fee that ranges from 20-50 thousand, is not affordable by every common man. Students who are already pursuing graduation with the help of loans might be left with no choice but to drop out because of financial pressure. It is not easy to arrange such an amount in a span of 10 days.
Moreover, why were the students and parents not made aware of the situation soon? We the students have nothing against the State Government or our Education System. Sudden fee hike isn't an ingenious decision, there is a disparity among the income levels of every family. We don't run on a socialist regime, so why are we being compelled to pay anything for the past years? How is government planning to extract money from the pass out batches who attended the sessions from 2014-15 as well? We just need valid answers to our questions mentioned above, and need our government to take rational actions and improvise the schedule for hiked fee to the commencing year.
Kindly help us reach our government and make them understand the face of reality that every common man has to go through. It is not just irrational, but brutal to people who keep faith in our system and send their children to become a better future for this nation.
Thank you.
