There are many myths and much misunderstanding when it comes to dogs and dog breeds. What I know about bully breeds comes from having owned them and loved them for many years. If I could, I'd like to tell you about Marvel. Marvel was a young "pit bull" type dog, who was either allowed to roam freely or had otherwise escaped his yard. He was causing no harm to anyone but, for "fun", someone shot him through both front legs. He was found by a good Samaritan named Carl, on Carl's property and the first miracle was that Carl and his friend even saw him, because he was unable to use his front legs. But they did see him and decided to try to help him. They were a bit nervous, because he was a "pit bull" and because he was so badly hurt. The second miracle happened as they were driving around with him in the back of their truck and they stopped at a local business where Jason worked. Jason called his neighbor, Charlotte, who is a trainer and a bull dog advocate. Charlotte was miles from home so she called me. My sister and I agreed to go and check on him and made arrangements to meet Carl and his friend and get the dog. Carl and friend helped us load him in our car and we took him home. I know we hurt him, every time we had to move him, but he only wagged his tail and licked our faces. The next morning we again loaded him in the car and took him to the vet. My regular vet was out that day and the vet who saw him, x-rayed his legs and verified that it was gunshot wounds. She recommended euthanasia. I called Charlotte, sobbing, and her question to me was, "What does your gut tell you?" I said, "My gut says this is a good dog who wants to live." She said, "We will make it happen." Long story short, through months of pain and 7 surgeries, including the amputation of his left leg, Marvel never once growled, never even raised a lip, hardly even whined. He was so good that I could tell him, "Roll over and let me look at your elbow" and he would wiggle over and stick it up for me to clean and bandage.
Marvel has his own FaceBook page, https://www.facebook.com/pg/OurCaptainMarvel and a huge fan club who all came together and donated over $14,000 for all his surgeries. People from all over donated, some of them from overseas, even. And many that I'm still in contact with, that I'd never have known, if it weren't for Marvel.
The sad fact is that Marvel was not the only dog in that area who was shot through the front legs. There were at least 4 that we know of. 2 others also lost a leg. Someone was doing it for "sport." We'll never know how many crawled off and died.
He is now a happy, healthy, loving tripod, living with a family who loves him very much. He is not good with other males but lives happily with a female Lab mix. And my sister and I are "the Grandmas" who visit and spoil and love him, too.
