Animal advocates have declared it Puppy Mill Free Arizona Day to educate Arizonans about the dangerous law that takes effect on August 6th. As you know, the Arizona State Legislature passed, and the Governor signed, a law that protects the puppy mill-pet store supply chain by ensuring that no municipality passes an ordinance prohibiting pet stores from selling puppy mill puppies as well as voiding existing ordinances in Phoenix and Tempe. In addition, the law states that regulation of pet dealers is a statewide concern, implying that the sourcing provisions in the law accomplish meaningful regulation of pet stores. In reality, these provisions only prevent pet stores from buying from federally licensed puppy mills with certain Animal Welfare Act violations, which depends on a broken federal inspection program. This law also allows pet stores to source from completely unregulated, unlicensed puppy mills. Arizonans must come together against this bill by never purchasing a puppy from a pet store.

Tucson - Also on the Aug. 6 Day of Action, four Tucson animal shelters are joining forces to offer discounted adoption fees and/or prizes for adopters on a special “Adopt, Don’t Shop” day. The participating shelters - the Hermitage No Kill Cat Shelter, The Humane Society of Southern Arizona (HSSA), Pima Paws for Life, and Pima Animal Care Center - strive to raise public awareness of the hundreds of homeless animals, including purebreds, available for adoption in Tucson’s shelters. “Adopt, Don’t Shop” day also marks the effective date of Arizona’s harmful pro-puppy mill law, SB 1248. The law will prohibit cities, towns and counties from enacting ordinances banning the sale of commercially raised dogs and cats in pet stores and will void ordinances in Phoenix and Tempe. Due to the law, a draft pet store ordinance in Tucson that was pending the outcome of a lawsuit against the City of Phoenix will no longer take effect.
