Arizona's Shelters Are Overflowing — We Need Emergency Pet Support Now

The Issue

Right now, animal shelters across Arizona are in crisis. Rising inflation, housing insecurity, and the soaring cost of pet food and vet care are forcing people to make heartbreaking decisions — including surrendering beloved pets they can no longer afford to keep.

Shelters in cities like Phoenix, Tucson, and Mesa are beyond capacity. Kennels are overcrowded, resources are stretched thin, and some animals are at risk of being euthanized simply because there’s nowhere else for them to go. This isn't about irresponsible pet ownership. It's about good people facing hard times and having no safety net to keep their pets at home.

We’re calling on Governor Katie Hobbs and the Arizona Legislature to take immediate action and create an emergency funding program for pet retention and shelter relief. That means support for low-income pet owners, emergency vet care, food banks for pets, and funds to help shelters expand capacity and staffing in this urgent moment.

Every animal deserves a safe place — and every family should be able to keep the pets they love, no matter their financial situation. A temporary setback shouldn’t mean permanent separation or worse.

This is a moment for compassion. With smart, fast funding, we can prevent suffering, reduce strain on shelters, and keep more pets in the homes where they belong.

Please add your name to demand immediate emergency relief for Arizona’s animal shelters and struggling pet owners. Together, we can protect animals — and the people who love them.
