On October 6, 2016, a complaint was filed in the RI Superior Court against Barrington Public School, the RI Department of Education, Statewide Transportation System, and First Student, Inc. in regards to the assault upon Arizona Jacobowitz on October 7, 2013. The case will detail unsafe conditions on First Student school buses, such as, inappropriate training of bus staff and failure to have a crisis procedure and protocol policy implemented on the school bus.
In response to the complaint filed, Barrington School Committee filed a criminal complaint against Arizona's parents for not sending Arizona to school. Barrington will attempt to prove that First Student, Inc. School buses are safe and Arizona's former education placement is appropriate.
Let us remind you that Barrington and the RI Department od Education both permitted the aide, James Caton, and the bus driver, James Miller, who was found with blood on his hands, to continue to transport other students after the same staff assaulted Arizona; criminal charges were never filed against Caton or Miller.
Barrington must realize that the focus should be on securing an appropriate education and safe transportation for Arizona. The concern should always be the child and as educators, they should know this. Think about the child, not retaliating against the parents.
