Make masks mandatory in the state of Arizona
The Issue
With COVID-19 cases rising across the nation, Arizona continues to draw national attention for being the number one state for having the highest number of positive tests per capita (10+ positive tests per 100k). Since the Stay-at-Home order expired on May 16, 2020, Arizona has seen a tremendous spike in Corona virus cases. With over 32,000 cases and nearly 1,500 deaths, Governor Doug Ducey insists that "this is not a crisis situation". Apart from reopening the state, Governor Doug Ducey has allowed businesses such as bars and clubs to reopen- where social distancing and PPE is almost impossible to in force and practice. Our hospitals are being overwhelmed with the sudden influx of patients and are being forced to open up additional floors specifically for COVID-19 patients. These hospitals are in need of ventilators and are now requiring health professionals to flock in from across the country to keep up with the surge in cases. State Representative Kelli Butler said "Arizona is not ready for this... our hospitals are sounding the alarm." Although many health professionals have expressed their concern for COVID cases rising across the state, no further action has been taken by Governor Doug Ducey to aid in decreasing the spread of the virus. Instead, he devoted his time to enforce a curfew due to protesting, but is now SILENT when the state of Arizona is #1 in the country for increasing COVID-19 cases. Many individuals will try to argue that this rapid rise came directly from recent protests. However, when looking at statistics, it is evident that this spike was predominantly caused by the premature opening of the state. Arizona's top public health official Dr. Cara Christ stated "we are not going to be able to stop the spread, but we can't stop living." It is now in our hands, to project our voices once again to make a change, and demand mandatory PPE to be worn upon entrance to public places. The state of Arizona is home to many snowbirds and elders who are at high risk. It is selfish for Governor Doug Ducey and Public Health official Dr. Cara Christ to not enforce further action by mandating masks and should reevaluate the possibility of reenforcing the Stay at Home order for the safety of the residents of Arizona.
