If you feel our children’s hard work should be valued and rewarded, and not dismissed by the use of irrelevant non-academic criteria then please sign now.

In summary:

Keep sharing this petition!  We are continuing to share your comments with key decisions makers to make sure your voice is heard.

The starting premise for this petition was that we wanted to, if it was at all possible to keep the AQE this year, and run it as soon as possible.  As this is no longer possible due to the decision over COVID 19, we propose that our contingency option, of some form of academic criteria, be applied to the grammar school entrance criteria.

Updates are very important to read.  Click on the "Updates" tab above, or scroll down to see them.  The latest update, is titled "Getting Closure, Dignity and Respect". The article: "Farfetched is becoming reality", is still available to read. It discusses the outcomes for children based on the application of some published "no AQE results" non-academic criteria; Every school is different and this is currently a very fluid situation.

The detail:

Let the majority speak!  We, as many others did, quietly tolerated the decision by the AQE to reschedule November’s exams to January, knowing that the looming litigation by a few who did not represent the majority opinion was taking priority in that instance.  We have been tolerant, we have been polite, too polite it would seem, but now is the time to say “No more!”

We have signed our children up for the AQE, it was our choice.  The AQE test is simple and effective.  It may not be the “perfect solution”, but is anything perfect?  It is certainly exceptionally better than this current situation of the non-academic criteria proposed by some schools to transfer to secondary education.

The children have prepared, they were disappointed in November and forced to patiently wait (November’s AQE rescheduling).  They are now ready again with just days/hours to go, and they have been told it is cancelled, then hours later rescheduled - and for what reason?  There is no valid reason.  Claims of health risks are without question a ruse.  Most of our children have been out of circulation entirely, effectively quarantined, for 4 weeks now.

The children have been in school since September, 5 days a week, and as such have been exposed to much higher risks during that time, than 3 separate approximately 1 hour sessions spread over 3 weeks in a strictly managed COVID safe environment with smaller groups from their own class.  The maths is simple, 1 hour, not 30 per week, for 3 weeks; the risk comparison is stark; the health risk of AQE attendance now is minimal, and one that we as parents are prepared to take.

How the AQE board came to the conclusion that stopping face-to-face teaching should stop the AQE is incredulous [5/1/21].  The NI executive’s decision to cease face-to-face teaching on the 4th of January was presented to the public as a way to reduce transmission en mass, and should have been embraced by the AQE as enhancing the chances of more children successfully completing more tests, and finally giving children closure on this long overdue test.

Conclusion

So in conclusion, we had maintained that we should get the tests done as soon as possible, and waiting 6 additional weeks was unnecessary, illogical, cruel, and just gave further uncertainty to all involved.  Now that the AQE test has been cancelled completely, we refer to our contingency of rewarding the hard work of our children by applying some form of academic criteria to the grammar school entrance criteria.

We need the grammar schools, and the EA to act as soon as possible to ensure that academically able children will not lose the opportunity to go to the grammar school of their choice as a result of some random selection criteria!

Record of modifications:

This section is for history only.  Any changes made will make no substantive change to anything you have signed your name to.  It is merely to make this petition current.

I will regularly update the first paragraph after the summary list to alert you of any updates.

Summary bullet point changed 10/1/2021: Run the first AQE this weekend at minimum; TO: Run the first AQE test once at minimum asap;

Added statement: Most of our children have been out of circulation entirely, effectively quarantined, for 4 weeks now.

In Conclusion: daily school contact this week. TO: daily school contact.

Starting premise:

Keep the AQE this year.
Run the first AQE test once at minimum asap; all 3 is preferable.
The children are ready now.
The test centres are ready now.
We want the AQE to immediately U-Turn.

Original Conclusion:

So in conclusion, the children are ready now, the test centres are ready now, and the risks have been reduced by removing daily school contact.  Waiting 6 additional weeks is unnecessary, illogical, cruel, and just gives further uncertainty to all involved.

We need the AQE to go ahead as soon as possible!
