The issue

For decades, the use of 1080 poison has continued in Australia without a comprehensive review evaluating its impacts. The last time authorities addressed the use of this potent poison, they failed to consider a critical question: Is 1080 poison humane? This is a question that needs immediate attention, as it is not only an issue of animal welfare but also one of environmental sustainability and ethics.

Time and again, studies and evidences have pointed out the severe repercussions and indiscriminate nature of 1080 poison. Used mainly for controlling 'pest'  species, "wild dogs" or dingoes,  it is a non-selective agent that poses a grave threat to non-target species, including our cherished native wildlife and pets. The impacts are devastating: animals suffer painful, lingering deaths, which is neither humane nor acceptable for a country like Australia, known for its rich biodiversity and strong commitment to conservation.

Despite the known risks and the ethical concerns surrounding this poison, decisions about its continued use have been made without giving these issues the attention they deserve. Other countries have already moved towards banning or restricting 1080 due to its adverse effects; yet here in Australia, it remains widespread.

It is crucial that governments must  explore more humane and targeted solutions that do not compromise our wildlife or environmental integrity. We owe it to our environment, to our wildlife, and to ourselves to ensure that the methods we use are truly sustainable and humane.

It is time the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) re-examined the ethics and science behind the use of 1080 poison. We call for an immediate suspension and a thorough review to determine its long-term viability and effects. Such a review should involve independent scientific investigation, transparency, and submissions from the public and stakeholders.

Sign this petition to urge the APVMA to take responsible action for the welfare of animals and protection of our environment. We need to push for a future where our core values of humanity and environmental guardianship are given priority.
