The Issue

Cancer significantly impacts the lives of millions of people in the United States every year, with devastating emotional, physical, and financial effects. Nearly everyone in Texas, including many people from Liberty High School and the broader Frisco community, has been directly or indirectly affected by cancer, whether through their own struggles with the disease or by standing with loved ones currently facing it.

The Students Against Cancer Club was first created around a year ago at Liberty High School and has made a profound impact in the battle against cancer at both a local and national scale. Affiliated with the American Cancer Society's "High Schools Against Cancer" program, we were able to raise over $400 and dozens of articles of donation for local American Cancer Society venues like the Dallas Hope Lodge. Additionally, the club is in the process of completing a cancer advocacy project based on geospatial data analysis, with major implications in state and federal legislation for carcinogen regulation. Moreover, the club was quite beloved last year, with over 50 members attending meetings and participating in club activities, making up a vital part of campus culture.

However, Liberty High School administrators recently denied the Students Against Cancer Club under the premise of reducing the number of medical-related extracurricular clubs on campus. As of October 13th, the medical clubs currently approved on campus are:

American Red Cross
Will include things such as first aid, CPR, etc.

AI in Medicine (AIM)
Will include technological advances in AI as it relates to medicine.

Neuroscience
Will include all mental health and well-being, brain function, etc.

The Students Against Cancer club is focused on legislative advocacy, fundraising for cancer research, and donation drives for cancer patients, clearly not fitting into any of the other categories above. Thus, it is only fair that it's also approved as an extracurricular club

We respectfully ask Liberty High School administrators to examine the significant benefits that the Students Against Cancer club brings to our campus and reconsider their decision.

Students of Liberty High School, stand with us in advocating for this positive addition to our campus by signing this petition today!
