The Issue

Many people with disabilities still have personal connections with nature trails. Despite their disabilities, they never let their condition prevent them from exploring the great outdoors. The George Snyder Trail that has been approved could be a significant outdoor outlet for them. However, its existence is in peril. If segments are not constructed, unnecessary physical barriers will not be removed for people who need handicapped-friendly trails.

As designed, the George Snyder Trail would stretch over a considerable length from the newly built I-66 trail to the Fairfax Circle area. This trail is seen not just as a recreational space but as a symbol of inclusion by being fully accessible. With the current global focus on inclusive and accessible design, the completion of this trail to be handicapped accessible is a pressing issue.

The World Health Organization reports that over a billion people, or about 15% of the world's population, experience some form of disability. For these individuals, and for older adults who require ease of access, finishing and ensuring handicapped-friendly finishes to the George Snyder Trail would provide a truly inclusive outdoor recreational experience.

By signing this petition, you advocate not only for your family and the yet unborn, but also for a more inclusive society that allows every individual, regardless of physical abilities, to enjoy our shared natural wonders. Please lend your voice to this cause and call upon our local leaders to take immediate action to complete the George Snyder Trail in its entirety, ensuring its accessibility for all.
