Every night in our community of Port Stephens, NSW, Australia, we face a harsh reality. There is a swell of individuals living rough and seeking refuge in parks because they do not have access to proper housing.

This devastating reality is personal to me and to many others. I have seen our friends and neighbours struggling, and it is heartbreaking. Statistics illustrate the depth of the problem: approximately 116,000 Australians are without a home on any given night, and this issue is only exacerbated in areas where housing is in short supply, such as our community (reference to Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2016 Census data).

The authorities have been largely silent on this increasing crisis, which has triggered a dramatic spike in mental and physical health issues amongst our populace. We cannot allow this to continue. The need for adequate, affordable housing is not only basic but also essential. Housing security forms the foundation in a person's life upon which they can build towards a more prosperous future.

We implore Port Stephens' local council and other relevant authorities to put much-needed serious attention and resources toward providing essential housing to those who need it most.
