The Issue

One block of sidewalk can make the difference between our children walking safely to school or walking in the road. Our community is at a pivotal point where we can make a significant impact on the safety of our children commuting to and from school. This is fixable — and once the sidewalk is in place, we can push for crosswalks, crossing guards, and school zone signs next.

We are requesting approval for the construction of a crucial sidewalk on Sara Avenue North between 5th E and 6th E. The lack of a connected sidewalk not only endangers children but also hinders the implementation of other essential safety measures such as crosswalks and school zone signs. By approving this sidewalk, we open the door to a comprehensive plan that enhances pedestrian safety across our neighborhood.

According to the National Center for Safe Routes to School, children are twice as likely to be hit by a car when walking in the road compared to on a sidewalk. Installing this sidewalk will significantly reduce the possibility of accidents and empower our community to implement additional safety measures effectively.

We plan to present this request at the BPAC meeting on May 21, 2026, at 3:00 PM. We seek to ensure a safe pathway for every child, parent, and guardian commuting through our area.

By signing this petition, you are endorsing a safer future for our children. Please lend your support by signing and sharing to gather as much momentum as possible before the meeting. Together, let's take the first step toward protecting our community's most vulnerable members.
