The Issue

In Midtown, Houston, the potential for a vibrant and thriving community is immense. However, to fully realize this potential, the right people need to be in positions where they can drive meaningful change. Currently, Houston's Midtown Redevelopment Authority/Midtown TIRZ #2 Board is composed of 9 members, with the Mayor of Houston appointing 5 of these members. Shockingly, of these 5 appointees, only 2 are residents or property owners in Midtown. There's a pressing need for new members in the Midtown Management District (MMD) as well.

For Midtown to blossom into a locality filled with high-quality retail options, safety, and walkable streetscapes, we require board members who have a direct stake in the community's success. This means appointing individuals who live, own businesses, work in, or own property in Midtown—essentially, those who truly understand and are committed to the area's growth.

Mayor Whitmire:

Our community is calling for change. You've received multiple applications for these Midtown Board positions but have not taken action. Please appoint local stakeholders to these critical Midtown board positions, and honor not only Midtown's current residents and business owners, and invest in a future that prioritizes local voices and concerns. We need you to promptly approve new board appointments before the start of the new fiscal year on July 1.

Midtown's stakeholders are passionate about their neighborhood and want it to reach its full potential. By joining our efforts in signing this petition, you are advocating for a prosperous, safe, and engaging community. Each signature strengthens our appeal for a community-oriented governance that will shape the future of Midtown.
