As an avid AFL fan, I find myself suffering through subpar commentary week after week on Channel 7. The current commentary does not meet the standards that we, the fans, deserve. We need a commentator who can provide intelligent and interesting insights into the game we love so much. That's why I'm calling for Gerard Whateley to be appointed as the AFL commentator for Channel 7 from 2025 onwards.

Gerard Whateley is renowned for his insightful and engaging commentary style. His ability to dissect games and provide in-depth analysis is unmatched in our sport. He has been recognised by his peers with multiple awards, including being named Broadcaster of the Year by Sports Australia Media Awards (source: Sports Australia).

The current state of AFL commentary on Channel 7 leaves much to be desired. A survey conducted by Roy Morgan in 2019 found that only half of viewers were satisfied with their sports broadcasting experience (source: Roy Morgan). This dissatisfaction largely stems from lackluster commentating which fails to capture the excitement and intricacies of our beloved game.

By appointing Gerard Whateley as commentator from 2025 onwards, Channel 7 can significantly enhance their viewers' experience during AFL games. It's time we had a voice behind the microphone who truly understands and respects our sport.
