Appoint a Special Prosecutor in the Death of Kendrick Johnson

The Issue

We are demanding the immediate appointment of a Special Prosecutor to review and investigate the death of Kendrick Johnson, a 17-year-old student who was found deceased on January 11, 2013, inside a rolled-up gym mat at Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Georgia.

For more than a decade, Kendrick Johnson’s family has sought answers and accountability. Instead, they have faced conflicting conclusions, unanswered questions, and repeated refusals to pursue a full and impartial prosecution. Local authorities and prosecutors who were involved early in the case have maintained control over decisions, creating serious concerns about conflicts of interest, bias, and lack of transparency.

A case of this magnitude — involving a child’s death under suspicious circumstances — demands independent oversight. Justice cannot be served when the same systems questioned for investigative failures are allowed to police themselves.

Why a Special Prosecutor Is Necessary

A Special Prosecutor is essential to ensure:

 • Independence from local agencies previously involved in the case

 • Freedom from political pressure or personal relationships

 • A fresh, unbiased review of all evidence

 • Public confidence in the outcome of the investigation

Without independent prosecution, the Johnson family and the public are left with doubt instead of truth.

Our Demands

We respectfully demand that the appropriate authorities:

 1. Appoint an independent Special Prosecutor with full authority to review Kendrick Johnson’s case.

 2. Re-examine all evidence, including autopsy reports, photographs, forensic findings, and witness statements.

 3. Investigate potential misconduct or negligence in the original investigation and prosecution decisions.

 4. Determine whether criminal charges are warranted, wherever the evidence leads.

 5. Provide transparency and public reporting of findings to restore trust in the justice system.

Who We Are Petitioning

We call upon:

 • The Governor of Georgia

 • The Georgia Attorney General

 • The Georgia Bureau of Investigation

 • The U.S. Department of Justice (Civil Rights Division)

Closing

Kendrick Johnson was a son, a student, and a young man with his entire future ahead of him. His life mattered — and so does the truth about how he died.

Appointing a Special Prosecutor is not about presuming guilt; it is about ensuring fairness, independence, and justice. The Johnson family deserves answers free from conflict or influence.

Justice for Kendrick Johnson begins with an independent Special Prosecutor.
