Apple: Include an Option to Disable Glassy Outlines in iOS 26
The Issue
Dear Apple Development Team,
With the release of iOS 26, a new visual effect—default glassy outlines applied automatically to widgets—poses serious concerns for designers and developers who rely on custom widget creation.
We, the undersigned respectfully urge the inclusion of a simple option to disable those outlines introduced in iOS 26.
For the past 2 years, I’ve been building a custom widget ecosystem, carefully designing every detail for a seamless visual experience. This new automatic outline jeopardizes and disrupts the integrity of not only my work, but that of many others in the widget design community. It affects all widget sizes—small, medium, and large—and interferes with transparency, layered shapes, and unique layouts crafted through platforms like Widgy.
This issue goes far beyond individual preference:
- Thousands of creators depend on widget design as a source of income.
- Years of meticulous design work would now appear broken or compromised under the new visual system, rendering the widget packs of many talented designers, unworkable.
- Transparency-related workarounds do not resolve the issue—the outline remains in place.
- About half of iPhone users have not updated to iOS 26.
With iOS 26, the excellent work of many talented developers and designers has not only sadly been diminished, and rendered useless—but will also impact their income, and very means of living. The unwanted residual liquid glass "artifacts" not only affect widget designers, but are also a visual nuisance to many iphone users in general.
According to ZDnet, as of late January 2026, roughly 50% of iPhone users have not upgraded to iOS 26.
Apple is known for its dedication to user experience, design excellence, and empowering creativity. We believe the solution is simple: add a toggle under Accessibility or Display settings that allows users to disable the glassy outline.
One of my guiding principles as a developer is, “Give the user choices.” We ask Apple to honor that same spirit of flexibility as they have before.
Please consider this request and support the many thousands of creators whose work is built on your incredible platform.
Respectfully,
Warner B.
