I just contacted CBC's Sophia Harris in hopes to get some traction with this.

Here's what I wrote:

Hi Sophia,

Following the reading of your recent article titled https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/westjet-cancelled-flights-refund-1.6083926

, I thought perhaps you would like to hear an update on the status of my original flight I emailed to you last year.

I may not have informed you of all the developments but I managed to convince WestJet back in March of 2020 to move the full flight portion of my travel package to WestJet travel credit.
Although this was not ideal, they weren't offering refunds (and still aren't), it did allow me to ensure I didn't simply lose my money.

To summarize our situation, we booked with a now defunct travel agent Bookit.com before the pandemic. In March 2020, prior to our trip to Dominican Republic, we saw the warning signs before the border closings were made official, and we cancelled our "non-refundable" trip.  That part still bothers me, because less than a week later, flights were being cancelled borders closed. Our flight was cancelled by Bookit.com and WestJet moved the flight portion balance to WestJet travel bank good for 12 months.
Last year, around January, I had to contact WestJet to get them to extend the deadline to which they extended it a further 12 months to be booked by March 2022.

However, at this time, my family still does not want to travel due to restrictions in place as well as feeling uneasy with travelling since my 5 and 8 year olds both remain unvacinated and the Delta variant is still concerning. I have contacted WestJet twice through email complaining about the likely unusable travel credit, asking for a full refund or at the very least asking them to offer a further extension to the arbitrary 24 month deadline.
They reply with a generic email stating "Where a guest chooses to cancel their itinerary,  whether in anticipation of the impact of COVID-19, or for any other reason, the full value of the ticket will be returned as a WestJet Travel bank credit, valid for 24 months"
Basically, not even entertaining the idea of an extension.

I replied mentioning that I have a petition on Change.org of over 57,000 signatures and would also contact media and I have also opened an official complaint with the CTA. Which I have also done.

I don't know what else to do. It's travel credit worth $4,671.16 CAD made up of my original money but if I am unable to use it by March 2022 it is lost.
That feels like robbery to me.

Hoping you agree and can help.
