Anti-Kantine: Make the UvA Canteen Vegan!

Anti-Kantine: Make the UvA Canteen Vegan!
The Issue
Anti-kantine petition for a plant-based university
We want all food offered at the University of Amsterdam to be completely 100% plant based. This includes coffee, vending machines, catering during meetings and catering during events.
The animal industry is responsible for:
Animal Harm
- Meat and dairy cause serious animal suffering. Animal abuse and other serious harm to animals or their wellbeing is very common in the animal industry. For the production of milk forced pregnancy is standard. After birth calves are almost immediately separated from their mothers, with very negative social and psychological consequences as a result. Livestock usually has unnaturally small living space and is a breeding ground for new epidemics like COVID-19.
Destruction of the Amazon Rainforest
- To feed the animals in the animal industry we need enormous amounts of soy, which is cultivated at cost of the amazon forest.
Nature Crisis
- Both the quality and the quantity of the nature in the Netherlands are insufficient. We are not living up the agreed upon goals with the United Nations for amount of wild nature. Furthermore the ‘stikstof crisis’ is killing our flora and fauna.
Climate Crisis
- The animal industry causes 14,5% of the carbon emissions globally.
Individuals can’t make a real difference by limiting their own consumption choices. We should not put the burden of saving the world upon individuals. Big organisations like the UvA can make a difference. If the UvA takes responsibility, hopefully other organizations will follow. Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam has already started. Cambridge University has already started.
If you really want to consume meat or dairy this is still possible. For example at home, in a restaurant, or during public holidays. (Maybe save it for special occasions) But the UvA should no longer facilitate the consumption of animal based foods.
A (partially) plan-based diet is proven to be more healthy.
Animal rights, the climate and our nature are more important then our taste buds. It’s time for the UvA to take responsibility.
