Ministry of Education, Arts & Culture to take in learners with D-symbols for AS Level.

The Issue

A midst the global pandemic, learners are still expected to make choices about their futures and that though alone cause a lot of anxiety.

The new curriculum is not only difficult due to its novelty, but it also comes with uncertainty as most learners are still not sure which academic path they want to take in life and even those who are, are struggling to work towards those goals.

If learners do not get 60% and above, then the second option will not be what they want. It will not be a choice. The only people who have a choice are the ones that excel academically. I reckon that many if not most learners who already had trouble performing are now even worse off academically.

The workload was overwhelming and it was mentally draining, it is also astrain on the teachers as they had to rush through the work in order to complete the academic year.

The leakage of exam papers highly affected the learners. These learners are affected both psychologically and financially. For them to rewrite would be something that will negatively affect their results. Mentally, the learners are distressed, anxiety prone and they have all the reasons to feel lost. Despite putting in the work, they’ve likely done a retest which was not sweeter as the first. This will definitely lead to pupils’ underperformance.

It is better to make the AS Level acceptance percentage 50 % so that everyone is given a fair chance to try and push through.
