Urge KMC to upgrade its infrastructure before the sterilization of 84000 dogs starts
The Issue
The KMC is set to vaccinate and sterilize 84,000 stray dogs in six months. According to a recent article which was published by TOI, there are 250 and 50 cages at Dhapa and Entally dog pound respectively.
This mammoth task of getting 84000, which makes 14,000 dogs each month, for the next 6 months, starting from April 2022, to be sterilized successfully, is next to impossible for KMC to achieve with their current state of infrastructure.
Any given day, a dog would be needing 3 days of post-operative care. an average of 5 days will be needed, from pick up till their release. hence it makes 6 batches of pickup in a month.
KMC has only 300 cages, which makes 300x6= 1800 dogs, which can be sterilized in a month if the success ratio is at all 100%.
In the past, we have seen unsuccessful drives conducted by KMC where strays and community dogs have been affected badly, eventually losing their lives and the number is shocking.KMC has a history of releasing dogs with unhealed stitches.
Mostly strays are scavengers, and they live off the leftover foods from the dustbin and creatures like rodents. That helps in keeping a lot of diseases under check. Also, in colonies where strays are fed, they keep the locality secured at night.
Birth control drives are the need of the hour, but not at the cost of their lives and this drive needs to be properly scrutinized, infrastructure needs to be upgraded if it begins at all.
Help us in reaching out to the authorized officials, including AWBI, KMC, ministry of environment and forest, the mayor ( Kolkata), to stop this menace before it begins, as we demand proper infrastructure and protocol which needs to be followed religiously before the sterilization drive starts.
