Animal Free Precision Medicine Manifesto

The Issue

The Methuselah Foundation exists to drive innovations that meaningfully improve quality of human life and increase life expectancy. Good thoughts and acts stem from healthy minds and bodies. Extending healthy human life will accelerate a better world for us all.

Biopharmaceutical innovation is the cause for more than 35% of the increase in life expectancy from 1990 to 2015. But animal testing, the core model for drug discovery, testing, and delivery, is holding us back. Years and years of delay for new medicines to enter the market are typical. The average cost for developing a new drug is $2.6 billion. Animal models are far from perfect and are in fact exploitative. Needless human and animal suffering are the result.

Now is the time to welcome a new era of personalized medicine, where drugs can be discovered and tested on bioprinted human tissue that cause no harm, but in fact, drives accuracy, speed and ultimately the best outcomes for patients.

Methuselah Foundation’s Animal Free Precision Medicine initiative is focused on:

• Dramatically improving drug development speed and probability of success
• Reducing and eventually eliminating the need for animal testing
• Significantly reducing risks and increasing benefits to patients in clinical trials and retail medicine

We dream of a world where cancer and aging-related drugs and therapies work for you, with your own engineered tissues, never against you. We dream of spearheading Animal Free Precision Medicine (AFPM) with government and pharmaceutical partners to help make 90 the new 50 by 2030 for anybody the new reality in personalized healthcare.
