Angela Rayner, listen to us: give survivors and bereaved a proper say on Grenfell's fate
The Issue
I’m a survivor of the Grenfell fire, having escaped in the lift from the 20th floor with my partner.
To a room full of my fellow residents of the tower, Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner recently told us her government was demolishing it.
Bereaved family members and survivors asked Rayner whether she had consulted our groups, and it was disappointing to see her get defensive in response to our questions.
It’s heartbreaking that this decision is being made without our support or understanding.
That's why I'm calling for the Grenfell Tower community - made up of the bereaved, survivors and the community living and working directly beneath the tower - to have a proper say in what happens to the tower and what a suitable memorial should look like.
We have not been properly consulted or engaged in making the decision to take down Grenfell Tower. There has been no justice. Until there is, the plans to demolish Grenfell Tower must be paused.
We recognise that there are many different opinions on what should happen next, both in terms of the safety of the site, and the psychological impact it still holds for all of us.
But the government hasn’t carried out a proper consultation with the community on its plans to take down the tower, whatever it says about “engagement” and meetings.
We call upon Angela Rayner to pause the process of taking down the tower, stall her decision and engage properly with those most affected and offer us some respect.
Grenfell Tower was covered in flammable material in order to hide us away, make us disappear from the sight line of those with wealth and power, resulting in the death of 72 of our loved ones.
We demand that every Grenfell bereaved, survivor, resident of Lancaster West estate and Notting Dale ward where the Grenfell Tower still remains, has the opportunity to have a say on the future of the tower and what a suitable memorial for the ones we lost in 2017 fire should look like.
Angela Rayner, you told us that you know us, you know our struggle. Show us some respect and help us maintain dignity for our loved ones killed in the most barbaric way.
Stand with us.
