Corona bonds now - for a united Europe!
Das Problem
I myself have a strong, personal connection to Italy: my wife comes from there and my three children grew up with two languages and cultures. During the 14 years I lived and worked in Italy, many deep friendships developed. Our friends and family there suffer on the one hand from the fear of the virus and on the other hand from the uncertainty about the unforeseeable economic and social consequences of this epidemic.
Italy and Spain are particularly affected by the Corona crisis and are unlikely to recover from the financial and social consequences of the disaster on their own. Our solidarity towards them is now needed urgently more than ever. It is in the interest of all Europeans to help these two culturally and economically unique countries.
The cohesion of Europe was already fragile and is now further threatened by the Corona crisis. There is now an urgent need for each member state of the European Union to put aside its own national interests in favor of the community. A disintegration of the Union has unfortunately become a real possibility due to this unprecedented epidemic.
Corona bonds are arguably the best way to secure the values that make up the Community of the European Union: democracy throughout and solidarity between the stronger and the weaker. Leading representatives from business and politics in Germany speak out clearly in favour of the Corona bonds. These include the director of the Institut der Deutschen Wirtschaft, Michael Hüther, or the former German foreign ministers Joschka Fischer and Sigmar Gabriel. According to Hüther, Corona bonds should be considered as a temporary measure in response to the crisis rather than a long-term European financial policy.
If Germany gave up its resistance towards the Corona bonds, a process of real social and economic healing would be possible in those countries hit the hardest by the crisis. Furthermore, anti-European forces and the resurgent right-wing nationalism within the member states could be weakened in the long run by these measures. In addressing this terrible crisis we have the chance to revive the European idea! We therefore ask you, Mrs. Merkel, to rethink your previous position and to enable the creation of Corona bonds in the interest of all Europeans.
