Allow Discounted MetroCard Fares for Low-Income New Yorkers

The Issue

Imagine having to spend 10 percent of your family's income on MetroCard fares. Now imagine having to ride buses and subways as means of transportation on a daily basis. This is the life for many low-income New Yorkers, but this should not be the case. With City Council member Jimmy Van Bramer stating perfectly, “New Yorkers shouldn’t have to decide between their subway fare and their groceries.” Many groups, such as students and the elderly, already receive discounted MetroCards; it is only time low-income New Yorkers, those who arguably need it most, receive this benefit as well.
