New York City Demands Online Voter Registration NOW

The Issue

New York City needs online voter registration now! With the rapid spread of coronavirus, all in-person voter registration efforts are gone. Just as our city moves to rapidly create a space for digital work and education, it must also create a digital space for democracy so young people can make their voices heard at the polls. Without an online voter registration system, too many of us will not be able to exercise their rights in the 2020 elections.

We call on Governor Cuomo, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart Cousins, and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, to pass legislation (S6463 / A8473) that would require the New York City Board of Elections to accept registration forms submitted online. This bill addresses an online voter registration platform created by the NYC Campaign Finance Board, per a city law passed in 2018, specifically for use by city voters.

Right now, only New Yorkers who have a state driver’s license or other ID issued by the NY Department of Motor Vehicles can register to vote online. This is an issue of equity and requires that the process of voter registration becomes accessible for all. Only 55% of New York residents have a driver’s license or other ID that allows them to use the DMV’s site.

We are facing a time of uncertainty and confusion but this is a clear solution. Sign this petition to ask New York’s leaders to ensure city voters have the opportunity to participate in the 2020 elections.
