HUEMCam (Hospitals. Under. Electronic.Monitoring)
The Issue
I want to protect all people and the HUEMCam will help do this. I understand there are privacy laws, but if a patient gives consent, they have the right to be monitored. During the time of quarantine, everything was shut down... including our visitation to loved ones in hospitals and everything was a mess.
Several years ago, my grandfather was ill, we were allowed to stay with him 24/7 if we wanted to. The VA hospital gave us pillows, blankets and food if we wished. We were able to spend very precious moments with grandpa...my mother with her father and my Nan with her husband .
More recently I lost my partner K.Huemmer whom I do not believe received the best care while in the hospital.
With the pandemic restrictions, I could only visit daily from 4-8pm with a mask. I couldn't wrap my head around it!! If the issue was me potentially spreading covid then I would be spreading it at 8:01PM too!
I understand we were cautious for the virus, but what harm would it do to have a camera in the hospital rooms & ICU since I couldn't be there?? Why not have cameras ALL THE TIME?
I once paid a dog boarding facility an extra $25/night to have a LIVE video feed to my pet's boarding room to have some peace of mind while on vacation. When a loved one is very sick there is an enormous amount of stress for families and friends. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to login and have that peace of mind, just as I did with checking on my dog?
Most hospitals have set visiting hours (with or without a global pandemic) and that's really cruel when you think about it; having a time limit with your loved one when sometimes time is not on your side.
Throughout the country, Police are starting to wear body cameras and it is having a huge impact on the police, our citizens and policies. It is quite obvious hospitals have people's lives in their hands. Everyday people die in our health care system due to neligence or ignorance and this needs to stop. Much like police reform, this will be a process...but with HUEMCam we can protect ourselves and others.
St. Luke's Hospital in San Francisco has cameras in their ICU. Dr. Shaughnessy is the medical director who states
"[with the cameras in the ICU] cases of sepsis, a full body infection, dropped by more than 1/3". He says "that translates to about 1,300 lives saved over a 3yr period"....This is our family, our loved ones. Hopefully, we never have to consult the footage or question the quality of care, but aside from that, clearly this camera can benefit the doctors as well. 1,300 lives saved by aiding the doctors with an extra pair of eyes. https://abc7news.com/archive/9367083/
So, help me help all of us by signing my Petition and I will be taking this to anyone I can to have it made law.
The HUEMCam is in honor of my late beloved partner K.Huemmer. The care he received was not up to par. I just wish myself or someone could have been a fly on the wall to ensure he was getting the proper care. All I have is my overhearing a nurse speak inappropriately about him and a video that he recorded begging for the nurses to call me, but they never did.
This is the day and age of surveillance and accountability. HUEMCam will not only keep doctors informed but also give them an extra set of eyes to help their patients more efficiently. It will give the rest of us a peace of mind. Im not trying to bombard the hospitals with more work and duties as I am aware of the nationwide staff shortages, so families should have the option to help with monitoring patients with a consented LIVE video feed in every hospital room in America!
HUEMcam so when patients are alone they're not really alone.
