Guaranteed InPerson Live Graduation Ceremony & Prom for all NY High School (2020) Seniors
The Issue
Due to COVID-19 Pandemic, High School Seniors in 2020 are being stripped of some of the most memorable, stepping stone, rite of passage moments in their lives. In consideration due to the World Pandemic, this petition is asking for prom and graduation ceremonies to get pushed to later dates, and be provided an inperson Live Graduation instead of being restricted whenever possible.
We ask that you please don’t take away something that we have earned and expect. The 2020 Seniors were born when the world was grieving over 9/11 and now we are supposed to graduate as the world grieves the Covid-19 Pandemic. Although our two biggest launches into freedom (Birth & Graduation) have taken place in the midst of tragedies, we know that the world is an amazingly beautiful place and it is awaiting all of us seniors with open arms.
We are currently losing school time with our friends that we have been with for the last 12 years or more, and will soon separate from.
To the seniors, the cancellation of school has not been a vacation. It's been wasted time we don't get to spend with friends the last few months before we graduate. We're anxious, realizing we may never be able to spend time again with our friends and enjoy all those special "Senior” events. We're nervous and anxious that we may not be able to walk across the stage and receive the diploma we've been working so hard on for the last 12 years. Please show support and compassion by not taking away our Senior Prom and Graduation and providing a Live inperson Graduation.
While we are stressed about what will become of our futures, uncertainty lingers. Some colleges have also postponed commitment dates until June 2020. Most seniors are missing out on Varsity Spring Sports as well as other events such as Senior Fashion Show, Battle of the Classes, Senior Awards, Varsity Awards, and other events relative to their school districts. Let's at least guarantee these things to keep our seniors spirits up during this time.
Graduation ceremonies and proms are talked about and built up over an entire 12 yrs of grade school. We've watched older siblings, cousins, neighbors, and friends graduate, and are excited for “our time”. Some students may even be the first to graduate in their family or have pushed past extreme circumstances to receive that diploma, and they all deserve to be celebrated. Just as the finish line comes into view in less than 3 months, the excitement builds over getting a cap and gown, planning a grad party, inviting family to come watch, it seems to be getting ripped away from us. Let's not take this away from any Senior, at least, give us our ceremonies to celebrate our once in a life time achievement, and our proms to spend the final hours with our closest friends. Stay Safe Everyone, Be Well, and PLEASE WASH YOUR HANDS. Thank you - Class of 2020 - The one where they were #Quarantined
