A jury found a Buffalo man guilty of assaulting two parole officers with his vehicle following a four-day trial, the Erie County District Attorney's office announced Thursday.
Randy White, 39, was found guilty of two felony counts of second-degree assault and a misdemeanor count of unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
Prosecutors said that on the night of Feb. 27, 2018, at about 9 p.m., White was sitting in the driver's seat of his vehicle that was parked in the a driveway of home on Northumberland. Two parole officers checking on a parolee under their supervision approached White and ordered him to provide ID and turn of the engine. Prosecutors said White refused, then "placed the vehicle into drive and reverse numerous times."
One of the officers was injured while jumping away from the car and the other suffered a hand injury while being dragged, prosecutors said.
One of the officers shot White in the leg during the incident. White drove away and was located near his home and was taken to Erie County Medical Center.
Last year, White told The Buffalo News that he didn't realize the men were parole officers when he dropped off his friend, a parolee, at the house. He said he was fighting back in self-defense.
“These people were trying to kill me,” he told The News. “I didn’t know who they was. I didn’t know what was going on. All I know was I was fighting for my life.”
White faces up to seven years in prison when sentenced on Sept. 3 by State Supreme Court Justice M. William Boller. He was remanded without bail.
