End caged hen farming in the UK

The Issue

My name is Lucy, I am 15 years old and I'm trying to change the way people think about foods, and the way we treat the animals who produce them.

Since the beginning of 2016 I have led two petitions to Tesco, Asda and Morrisons, asking them to end the sale of eggs from caged hens in their stores. Within six months, after 460,000 signatures, all three of the supermarket giants made the announcement that they will stop selling caged hens' eggs. Since then, many other Uk retailers, such as Aldi, Lidl & Iceland, have agreed to stop selling caged hens eggs too. By 2025 every major UK supermarket has promised to be cage free!

Although this is a major step forward, we need the public to be aware of the eggs available to them and to start making the connection between the products on a shelf and the animals in farms.

My goal for this petition is to reach out to as many people as possible, and encourage them to stop and think before they buy eggs and egg containing products. In this day and age, there are so many alternatives to cruelly produced food. Imagine the impact it could have if supermarkets saw a clear rise in customers buying free range, organic, or rspca assured products- this is the best way to influence these companies.

Caged hens spend around 18 months cramped in restrictive cages, unable to move around freely or experience the outside world. After this time, the majority of commercial hens are sent to slaughter. The space available per hen is marginally larger than an A4 sheet of paper.Hens require more than the bare minimum commercial cages provide.

Although 2025 will be the year all the biggest UK supermarkets stop selling caged hens eggs, these eggs are still used in other products and by some smaller companies. This is why we have to make a conscious decision to convert our awareness into action, and ensure that we are all buying the highest welfare products available to us. We cannot ignore the way hens are being treated, we have to stand up to injustice and ensure we all do our bit to influence the eggs which are used in local cafes, restaurants and shops.
Please sign this petition to make a pledge to avoid caged hens eggs, and always search for the highest welfare products available to you!
Thank you all,

Lucy
