It’s simple the old design is iconic, the new one is not. Sure it might be visually appealing for a brand without such a robust history, like perhaps a beer brewed exclusively for Sea World, but it’s an abomination to an icon. Anchor’s problem is distribution, not appearance. I’ve lived in three states and have to go to specialty stores to find it anywhere outside California (& I couldn't even find it in Florida or Montana).
