Minjerriba/Straddie has a large indigenous and elderly population. According to the World Health Organisation and our governments Health experts, this poses a high risk for a catastrophic loss of lives throughout this COVID-19 Pandamic. 

The PM has announced level 2 restrictions across Australia, including the cessation of all non-essential travel, we believe that holiday makers/tourists fall under this category of non-essential travel. 

Given that the main destination points for our island is via the barge/vehicle and passenger ferries we demand that you direct all non-essential travel via these methods cease immediately and allow for only essential services to continue for medical, food supply, waste services etc and for residents only.

At this stage of the Pandemic, the only people that should be on this island are residents only!!!

Our health service is no where near the level required to be equipped for this type of pandemic disaster. Any essential health services we have remaining here on the island should be readily available for residents only. Our health facilities will not cope with the extra strain of tourists at this time. 

It would be negligent, irresponsible and an extreme lack of duty of care for the current government to knowingly allow this to happen to our community.
