Hi Cash Lovers,
Everyone has heard bank executives complain about the cost of branches, using words like "changing consumer preferences."
They've closed more than 1400 branches in the last seven years.
BUT these 'changing consumer preferences' DON"T show up in the official RBA data. Since the end of the COVID era (January 2022) there is no steeply declining trend away from cash withdrawals made in bank branches.
On average there are about 1.9 million cash withdrawals made in branches each month. That number is not changing despite the loss of bank branches.
What is actually happening is bank staff "are trained to steer customers towards using ATMs and online banking to decrease in-person visits to branches" says the Finance Sector Union.
As a result the public's confidence and trust in banks is at risk.
"While the move to digital channels can lead to cost savings and potentially higher profitability for banks, it has raised several concerns regarding its impact on customer satisfaction and trust," says Dr My Nguyen from RMIT.
Bendigo Bank is the latest bank to announce a spree of new bank branch closures, leaving many towns with no bank branch at all.
Bendigo advised their Queenstown customers they can get fee-free cash withdrawals - at an ATM 152km away.
The combined net profit after tax of the big four banks in the first six months of 2025 was $15.5 billion, up 3.5%.
