Dear Cash Lovers,
For six months the government has refused to release submissions to the Mandating Cash Acceptance Consultation.
This is highly unusual.
Commonwealth Treasury officials have already asked submitters for permission to publish their submissions but still no submissions have been made public.
The most obvious explanation is that thousands of submissions criticised the government's proposed cash mandate as far too weak.
97% of Australians expect the cash mandate to be a real mandate, requiring businesses to accept cash, says CHOICE.
But 97% of retailers will NOT be required to accept cash under the government's current proposal.
So I have lodged a Freedom of Information request to see the submissions that people have already agreed to make public.
I want to know - what is the government hiding? Is the Albanese government serious about a cash mandate or was that just pre-election promises?
The Commonwealth Treasury has 14 days to release the information or come up with excuses about why they want to be secretive about this issue.
