Amplify Awareness and Support for the Equal Rights Amendment
The Issue
After delving into the exploration of social movements in my U.S. History Ethnic Studies class, I stumbled upon the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). Embarking on a research journey to understand what it constituted, I found it fascinating and equally alarming. Despite its necessity to ensure gender equality in the U.S., the ratification of the ERA has been stalled for decades.
Initiated more than half a century ago in 1972, the ERA, designed to guarantee equal legal rights for all U.S. citizens, regardless of sex, is yet to be fully incorporated into the Constitution. Historically, it has been ratified by 38 states, just meeting the threshold for inclusion in the Constitution. However, the original ratification deadline passed before this threshold was met, leading to a legal limbo that has left the ERA unverified (National Archives).
The importance of this Amendment cannot be overstated. It is a pivotal step towards systematic equity and justice, rendering a constitutional warranty against discrimination based on sex. Aside from its moral imperative, the Amendment bears significant economic impacts as well; studies have shown gender equality could boost the global GDP by $12 trillion by 2025 (McKinsey Global Institute).
The path to gender equality is long overdue. This petition is to raise awareness about the significance of the Equal Rights Amendment, pushing for its rightful ratification and full enforcement. Sign this petition to join the movement for equal rights, cementing your commitment to equity and justice.
