AMNH must return Indigenous Woman's remains to her people
The Issue
The American Natural History Museum in NYC is currently in possession of, and actively displaying, an indigenous womans remains in their Ritual Heads exhibit. This woman is believed to be associated with the Nasca tribe in Peru. This is a blatant display of disrespect and disregard for all indigenous peoples, especially the ancestor being displayed. This exhibit also dehumanizes indigenous people and reinforces the stereotype that indigenous people are/were savages pre colonization.
This action is legal under NAGPRA, the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation act, because the Nasca are no longer with us and can not speak up to reclaim and honor their ancestor. Let us remind them that Indigenous Americans are all family, and we will see no indigenous person disrespected in this way.
We demand this ancestor be taken from public view and entrusted to an indigenous person who can properly honor her.
