PETITION regarding current nuisance operations located on Toombs Street, Moncton, NB
To: Moncton City Council, the Provincial Government of New Brunswick and the ELG (Environment and Local Government)
WHEREAS for many families in the Lewisville area of Moncton, New Brunswick, the presence of large scrap yard has become an unbearable nuisance. These families have lived in the neighbourhood for several years and have been forced to endure a significant increase in dangerous and noxious fumes from propane tanks. The piles of metal in the scrap yard have tripled in size to a point that they fill our sight lines and have taken over our once serene backyard views. The constant banging and crashing known to scrapyards begins often before 7am and continues even as late as 10pm daily - including on weekends. The fear of a fire reminiscent of what the province witnessed in Saint John in September 2023 is real and would have environmental impact that extends far beyond the immediate area of the scrap yard.
This situation is not only detrimental to our quality of life but also poses serious health risks due to prolonged exposure to harmful pollutants emitted by these scrapyards.
Adding to the issues are the seriousness of the potentially dangerous situation regarding the train blocking Mill Road as it maneuvers in and out of the scrap yard offloading or picking up product. This has been witnessed and experienced by numerous Moncton residents and happens several times per week, for lengthy periods of time. This creates gridlock around Elmwood drive at Mill Road and Pleasant Street at Mill Road. We fear what may happen if there is an urgent need for emergency vehicles to travel in that area. Lives could be lost.
WE the undersigned petition Moncton city council to be vocal in their support, the New Brunswick government, The Ministry of Environment and Local Government (ELG) for immediate action. We demand that they mandate the relocation of this scrap yard away from residential areas where it poses such harm and disruption of quality of life by a whole neighbourhood.
