Architects/Designers/Planners for Social Responsibility
17 feb 2015
Dear supporters, AIA's rejection of this petition has drawn sharp criticism from many corners, and the latest was in the New York Times. Architecture critic Michael Kimmelman strongly supported our cause in assessing AIA's position that their Code of Ethics should not regulate the design activity of architect members: "that "sounded like double talk." Of course, our campaign is about supporting human rights, not criticizing AIA. Kimmelman quotes the AIA President saying something we strongly agree with: “Many, if not most, architects enter this profession because it is a calling. They believe they can make the world a better place, they believe they can enhance the lives of people on a daily basis, where they live, work and play.” But we also agree with Mr. Kimmelman's conclusion: "is it really too much to ask that the organization representing architects take a stand against projects whose sole purpose is to do the reverse?" Please take a moment to read and share this article with friends and colleagues. We are shifting the debate on human rights and you are an important part of that. Thank you! http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/17/arts/design/prison-architecture-and-the-question-of-ethics.html?_r=0
