Architects/Designers/Planners for Social Responsibility
Nov 16, 2015
Dear supporters, At the end of October we received a letter from the President of the American Institute of Architects re-opening consideration of our petition to prohibit design of spaces intended for execution, torture, or other human rights abuses. In the letter, President Elizabeth Chu Richter informed us that the AIA’s National Ethics Council will be considering our ethics proposal as well as other public statements that AIA could make in support of human rights. We recommended a public statement approach -- in addition to our ethics proposal-- to follow on the lead of the American Pharmacists Association action earlier in the year, in which they publicly stated that members are discouraged from providing medical drugs to be used for execution as it is contrary to the values of their profession. We commend AIA on continuing to wrestle with this issue and we look forward to participating in discussions with the National Ethics Council on human rights. This would be a great time to share this petition with a friend to show support to the National Ethics Council!
