The Issue

We call on the American Diabetes Association to stand up and safeguard students with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) and update its 'Guidance for the Use of Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) in the School Setting' to align with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act and settlements commissioned by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).

  • In 2025 and as far back as 2020, the Department of Justice has issued settlement letters (below) revealing that schools, by refusing to monitor alerts transmitted from students' T1D CGMs to an app downloaded on to a school-provided device and failing to train staff in their use, may be in violation of the federal Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • The American Diabetes Association's CGM school guidance contradicts these settlement letters and contributes to schools' non-compliance with federal Americans with Disabilities Act obligations which endangers T1D safety, may deny federal rights, increases medical emergencies, and impedes academic progress.
  • The American Diabetes Association recognizes CGMs as the "standard of care" for T1D treatment, yet many school districts nationwide cite the association’s CGM school guidance to refuse or unreasonably restrict CGM use for students with T1D. Diabetes Technology Standards of Care in 2025. • Their guidance should clearly state that schools are expected to download CGM monitoring apps on school devices when a student is prescribed a CGM and remote monitoring is requested. Most importantly, it should educate schools that, under DOJ interpretation, denying this accommodation violates federal law. Failure to clarify this leads to daily emergencies, classroom disruptions, missed instruction, and unnecessary nurse visits when schools refuse.
  • The American Diabetes Association must use its influence, which encompasses its role and impact in diabetes advocacy and education, to safeguard T1Ds and educate schools about their federal legal obligations, advocating for changes in policies, practices, and procedures that unfairly limit T1Ds' access to their right to medical safety and equal education, leaving no room for violations.

CGM Technology:

“Continuous glucose monitoring means using a device to automatically estimate your blood glucose level, also called blood sugar, throughout the day and night. You can see what your blood glucose level is at any time. You can also review how your blood glucose level changes over a few hours or days and spot trends.”  (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. Continuous glucose monitoring)
