The Issue

I am a British citizen by descent and, unfortunately, this means my children are not automatically entitled to citizenship. For nearly seven years now, my family and I have been focused on the path toward Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the United Kingdom. However, during this process, we faced a significant and disheartening change in immigration rules. After years of anticipation and preparation based on the set criteria, the rules abruptly changed, effectively cancelling our ability to apply under the old system after five years.

This change in policy is not just a rule alteration; it's a disruption affecting many families who, like mine, have invested time, money, and emotional energy into integrating into British society. It's a decision that alters the plans and aspirations of young adults who have grown accustomed to life in the UK, are contributing to its economy, and are building their futures here.

The revised immigration rules create an unfair burden on those already midway through the ILR process. They have uprooted plans and created a costly barrier for families that are already settled in the UK. The focus should be on making sure the rules are consistent, predictable, and fair. By applying the new rules only to new applicants, we can maintain the integrity of the process and ensure that those who are already on a defined path towards settlement can continue without unexpected hurdles.

Many families face uncertainty and potential separation, which impacts the socioeconomic structure of communities. The evolving immigration rules have left hardworking individuals dangling in uncertainty, compromising their ability to plan their futures and achieve independence.

I urge the concerned authorities to reconsider the application of these new rules, permitting those who have been on the settlement route under the previous guidelines to continue without alteration. It’s a matter of fairness, equity, and human decency.
