I am a woman living in a society where laws can still be created to control women's bodies. This personal experience gives me a profound understanding of the ongoing inequality and discrimination that women face in the United States of America. The U.S. Constitution, a document meant to be foundational and guiding, does not expressly guarantee equality on the basis of gender. This omission renders millions of women vulnerable to inequalities that extend across social, economic, and political spectra.

In 1923, the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was first proposed to remedy this glaring oversight and to ensure that "equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex." Nearly a century later, the ERA has yet to be enshrined in the Constitution, despite the ratification by the requisite number of states. The path to its official adoption has been fraught with political roadblocks and controversy, reflecting a complex societal struggle to prioritize and codify gender equality.

The absence of constitutional gender equality translates into tangible disparities in everyday life. Women continue to encounter pay gaps in the workplace, discriminatory practices in hiring and promotions, inadequate healthcare access, violence, and permeability in personal decisions about their health and reproduction. While progress has been made through legislation and policy shifts, they can be as easily dismantled as they were constructed.
