Amend the Oath of Office for all elected public Officials in the United States!

The Issue

Fellow Americans, in the process of founding this great nation, people took great risks fighting for the American cause. They did not just face unemployment or the loss of their pensions if discovered by the British, they faced the death penalty. All because they believed in the American cause and their right to Independence and self-government!

Since then, politicians have grown very comfortable in their positions, complacent, and out of touch with most of the population. The only thing they sacrifice is our lives and our fortunes!!

Therefore, I would like to amend the Oath of Office for every elected position in U.S. Government.

The current Presidential Oath is:

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

The current Oath for people of Congress is:

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God."

I submit to you the following change for all elected public servants of the federal-, state- as well as local level, as it describes what it means to hold Office as a Representative not just of this great nation but of its People and the responsibilities that come with it!

"I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter, and that I, for the American cause, mutually pledge my life, my fortunes, and my sacred honor! So help me God."

As you probably recognize, these words were taken from the Declaration of Independence, one of the most important papers written in our history.

Brave men and women once stood firm in their believes, weathering the storm, facing the death penalty if captured (we used to hang traitors and spies), risking everything for the American cause!

Today's politicians have become less committed, not willing to risk anything, not even really caring about their reputation. Empty promises, backdoor deals and ignorance are the daily occurrence now.

This proposed Oath of Office shall be a stark reminder of what it means to be elected by the People and for the People. It shall be an unquestionable commitment and responsibility to the United States of America and its People, putting the American cause on the No. 1 spot of their list of duties and obligations!

Representatives of the United States have to be in for the right reasons, and the American people absolutely deserve a sworn commitment by people who want to take on such important position within the U.S. Government!
