Amend the Cats Freedom Act to Protect Gardens and Public Health

The Issue

I am a person living with an autoimmune problem and mental health issues. Gardening has become my sanctuary, a place where I can relax and find peace. However, this tranquillity is often disrupted by the unpleasant discovery of cat faeces in my borders and vegetable bed. This not only raises my anxiety but also poses potential health risks due to toxoplasmosis, a disease that can be transmitted through cat faeces.

The current Cats Freedom Act allows cats to roam freely without any restrictions on their defecation habits. While it's important for cats to have freedom, it's equally essential for us humans to enjoy our gardens without fear of health risks or disturbances.

In comparison, dog owners are legally obliged to clean up after their pets in public places under the Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996 in England and Wales. Failure to do so can result in hefty fines. Why should there be such disparity between these two domestic animals?

Accordingly, we propose an amendment to the Cats Freedom Act that would require cat owners take responsibility for their pets' waste when they are outside their property boundaries.

This is not about restricting feline freedom; it's about balancing rights with responsibilities while protecting public health and ensuring peaceful enjoyment of personal spaces like gardens.

Please sign this petition if you believe that everyone deserves clean gardens free from unwanted pet waste, regardless of whether they come from dogs or cats.
