Amend Tax Code to Exclude Military Retirement

Amend Tax Code to Exclude Military Retirement
The Issue
Our veterans and military retirees have dedicated their lives to serving and defending our nation, often at great personal sacrifice. Despite their invaluable service, the current tax code under the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 requires them to pay federal income tax on their military retirement and related benefits. This is not only unfair but undermines the financial security of those who have given so much for our country.
Amending the Internal Revenue Code to exclude all military retirement and related benefits from federal income tax is essential. It would recognize the unique circumstances and sacrifices of military service. Such an amendment would ensure that veterans, who have served in the various branches of the uniformed services of the United States, are not penalized in their retirement years by burdensome taxation on their earned benefits.
Statistics show that nearly 2 million military retirees currently receive pension benefits, and these benefits play a crucial role in maintaining their livelihoods post-service. Particularly, many of these individuals face challenges in transitioning to civilian life, and financial security is a vital part of this process. According to data from the Department of Defense and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, too many veterans experience income-related stress, partly due to the taxes levied on their retirement benefits.
Excluding military retirement benefits from federal income taxation would offer significant relief to over 20% of veterans who rely on these pensions for their basic needs, support healthcare costs, and ensure a stable financial future. Furthermore, this change would serve as a token of our country's gratitude for their service, providing them with the dignity and respect they deserve in their retirement years.
Senator Pete Ricketts (R-NE) has introduced a bill for this tax code amendment along with cosponsors Senator Jacky (D-NV) and Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) to help our veterans.
