Amend School transportation policys to allow refusal of transportation in pm
The Issue
As a school bus driver, I have had several encounters with students whose behavior has dramatically escalated from simple mischief to severe misconduct. This ranges from fighting with fellow students to threatening harm and even death to their peers and myself. The school's ineffective disciplinary actions have created an environment where such students feel that they can behave without any consequences. The toll these encounters have been having on the mental health of all drivers, and most certainly the students' safety, is a growing concern.
For a school bus driver, ensuring the safety and well-being of all students is our first priority. The current policy, however, handicaps our ability to maintain this safety. Across the nation, an estimated 23.5 million children use school buses to commute, according to the American School Bus Council. It's essential that these buses provide a respectful and safe environment for all.
Therefore, we urge the educational body to reconsider the existing bus driver policy and allow us to refuse service in the afternoon routes to students who have repeatedly shown a disregard for the rules and safety of others. This policy update would act as a deterrent, encourage students to think about the consequences of their actions, and ultimately lead to more respectful behavior that doesn't jeopardize the safety of others on board.
In a society that values the safety of its children and the wellbeing of its education workers, we must ensure our policies reflect our priorities. Let's change this policy for the welfare of our students and their educators. Sign this petition to stand for safer bus rides.
