The Issue

Every day, innocent Nigerians are living in fear, surrounded by constant threats from bandits, Islamic Fulani fundamentalists, and rampant kidnappings for ransom. I'm speaking up because I have witnessed firsthand how these heinous acts have disrupted the lives of law-abiding citizens and made everyday living unbearable. I am urging the Nigerian government to amend our constitution to allow citizens the right to bear arms, specifically up to Pump Action guns. This change would empower Nigerians to protect themselves and their families from the wave of violence that has gripped our nation.

The situation in Nigeria is dire. According to a report by SBM Intelligence, there were over 2,943 incidents of kidnapping and abduction across the country in 2020 alone, with figures steadily climbing in subsequent years. The presence of armed bandits and violent Fulani herdsmen has made rural areas especially dangerous, causing many Nigerians to live in constant fear for their lives and property.

In many countries, the right to bear arms has been crucial in enabling citizens to defend themselves and deter potential criminal activity. For instance, the United States and Switzerland have laws that enable citizens to legally own firearms for self-defense, contributing to a sense of personal security.

Currently, the Nigerian constitution does not provide for an explicit right for citizens to own firearms for self-defense. Amending the constitution to allow ownership of firearms for personal protection can serve as a vital tool in the fight against the rapidly escalating violence in our communities. This proactive measure will not only empower citizens but also send a strong message to the criminals that their actions will no longer go unchecked.

This is not a call for increased violence or lawlessness. Instead, it is a call for the Nigerian government to recognize the need for citizens to be able to defend themselves and their families when faced with immediate threats. It’s time for lawmakers to seriously consider how constitutional changes like this can provide a crucial layer of protection, especially in underserved rural areas where law enforcement presence is minimal.

We are calling on our legislators, the President, and other decision-makers to consider the safety of everyday Nigerians and the need for a self-defense mechanism in the face of unspeakable violence. By amending the constitution, the government can take an essential step towards ensuring that every Nigerian can live without the fear of victimization.

Please join me in this critical movement to safeguard our lives and futures. Sign this petition to demand a change in our constitution, enabling Nigerians to protect themselves and their loved ones from harm. Together, we can make a difference and work towards a safer Nigeria for all.
