Make dog abattoirs illegal

In New Zealand, many of us consider dogs to be cherished companions, loyal protectors, and beloved family members. Therefore, it is deeply alarming that, under current laws, the killing, slaughtering, sale, distribution, and consumption of dogs for meat or food products remains legal. 

Around the world, countries are taking bold stances against the consumption of dog meat. The United States, for instance, passed the Dog and Cat Meat Trade Prohibition Act in 2018, making it illegal to slaughter, trade, or consume dogs and cats. Taiwan also exhibited leadership in 2017 by banning the consumption of dog and cat meat. New Zealand, should join these nations in enacting a clear and comprehensive prohibition on this practice.
