The Issue

As a Michigan native and widow of a military soldier, I am deeply affected by the current limitations in the Michigan Widow Property Tax Exemption law. This legislation, as it stands, restrictively only benefits those surviving spouses whose veteran partners were Michigan residents at the time of service or death. This narrow scope unfairly excludes many spouses who have devotedly stood by their partners through the sacrifices and challenges of military service.

Michigan’s commitment to veterans and their families should not be limited by such technicalities. Surviving spouses of veterans, regardless of where their partners were residents when they served or passed away, deserve equitable support and recognition for their sacrifices. By only extending these benefits to a select group, the state fails to uphold its commitment to honor all veterans and their families who have contributed to the nation’s security and well-being.

Currently, the legal framework dismisses the shared life and sacrifices made by families who may have been stationed elsewhere but chose to call Michigan their home afterward. This creates unnecessary hardship for those spouses already enduring the emotional and financial burden that accompanies the loss of their partner. It is imperative that the state recognizes and corrects this oversight to reflect the true spirit of fairness and gratitude owed to every veteran’s family.

We propose that the Michigan Legislature amends this legislation to expand eligibility for the property tax exemption to all surviving spouses of disabled or deceased veterans, without residency restrictions. This change will not only rectify the current disparity but will also demonstrate Michigan’s broader commitment to justice and support for all military families.

By signing this petition, you support a compassionate and just amendment that reflects the values of fairness and respect for those who have already given so much. Please join us in urging the Michigan Legislature to take immediate action to amend this law. Your support and signature can drive real change for those who have served and the loved ones they have left behind.
